Science

Overview

Science is taught to all students. Science is an important discipline, which allows students the ability to broaden their understanding of the world around them and help them make informed decisions. It also helps to develop and refine the skills necessary for their future.

Year 7 and 8 students study a combined science route, which encompasses all the main scientific ideas within each discipline. Practical investigations are used extensively to develop practical skills and scientific methodology. Year 9 / 10 / 11 students are offered a wide variety of qualifications: Core Science, Additional Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Btec qualifications.

Curriculum

Year 7 and 8 students study Science for three hours per week and cover a range of topics including:

  • Basic Skills
  • Our Body
  • Circuits
  • Being Born
  • Circuits
  • Particles
  • Our Environment
  • Forces & Movement
  • Home Chemistry
  • Respiration & Digestion
  • Chemical Reactions
  • Patterns & Trends
  • Solutions
  • Electromagnets

Year 9 / 10 / 11 students follow the AQA suite of GCSE courses and offer Core Science, Additional Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Core and Additional Science consist of three modules, one from each discipline, all of which are assessed by terminal examination plus a school-based ISA (Investigative Skills Assignment) which is worth 25% of the final mark.

For Triple Award, each individual discipline also consists of three midules, each assessed by terminal examination at the end of the course plus a school-based ISA which is worth 25% of the final mark.

We also offer Level 2 Btec Applications of Science from Edexcel as a vocational qualification to complement the GCSE. This course consists of 3 units, each containing three Learning Assignmants which are school based plus a terminally assessed investigative unit.
